What can you expect at your initial consultation?

Listen to you and/or your child’s specific complaints and goals
Perform a thorough examination, focusing on you or your child’s individual anatomy. Careful measurements and photographs will be taken.
If surgery is the right option for you or your child, our TOPS plastic surgeon will discuss details of the surgical procedures for correction of prominent ears that are offered and which approach is right for you or your child
The risks and benefits of ear pinning surgery (otoplasty) will be thoroughly outlined for you and/or your child
You will be given ample opportunity to ask questions from both our TOPS plastic surgeons and plastic surgery staff regarding ear pinning surgery (otoplasty) in Houston, Texas
You will be sent home with a packet of information regarding the ear pinning (otoplasty) including a detailed consent form and instructions for before and after ear pinning surgery

What can you expect on the day of surgery?

The morning of your ear pinning (otoplasty) procedure, your TOPS plastic surgeon will meet you in the preoperative area to go over any last minute questions or concerns you may have. Your Houston plastic surgeon may make some preoperative markings, and will perform extensive checks and attention to detail ensuring high quality care and safety. If you are undergoing general anesthesia, you will meet the anesthesiologist and their team as well as the members of our operative team.

During the procedure, our Houston plastic surgeons pay meticulous attention to detail and work as a team to ensure a great result with a focus on safety and quality. Your family will be updated of your status periodically, and will be able to talk with your plastic surgeon one-on-one after the procedure is completed. Correction of prominent ears usually takes our Houston plastic surgeons 2 - 3.5 hours to complete. Please keep in mind that the cosmetic procedure may take a little longer for the surgical set up and for our patients to fully recover in the post-operative care unit.

What can you expect for recovery?

After your ear pinning procedure in Houston, Texas, you will have a dressing around your head and ears. This will be removed at your post-operative appointment. You may shower two days after surgery, allowing soap and water to run over your wounds without rubbing or scrubbing any of the surgical areas. You or your child will be advised to wear a headband over ears for six weeks following the procedure in order to decrease the risk of recurrent prominence of the ears. You will be advised to refrain from heavy activity or sports for six weeks during the healing process.
