What is fat grafting to the face?

Fat can be transferred to the face as a long term filler to aid in facial rejuvenation. It can be used to fill cheeks, lips, nasolabial folds and other lines and wrinkles of the face. Fat also has stem cells embedded within its structure, which have been shown to improve the overall appearance and texture of the skin. When performing fat grafting to the face, fat is harvested from areas of the body using liposuction techniques. It is then processed, removing much of the oils and excess fluid obtained from harvesting, and injected using small cannulas into the affected areas. If you are undergoing fat transfer to the face alone, the procedure can be done under local or general anesthesia. If fat grafting is performed with eyelid surgery or facelift, the plastic surgeons at The Oaks Plastic Surgery (TOPS) recommend that you undergo general anesthesia. You can choose which area you would like to have liposuction performed for the fat harvest along with your plastic surgeon.

Why do you want fat grafting to the face in Houston, Texas?

Fat grafting can take the place of filler in most areas. However, unlike filler, fat grafting often does not require serial injections—your body creates a new blood supply to the fat, making it a much more permanent solution.

What do you want from fat grafting to the face in Houston, Texas?

Fat grafting to the face should be performed to fit your individual anatomy. The plastic surgeons at The Oaks Plastic Surgery focus on giving you a natural, youthful appearance without making you look overdone.

What about nanofat?

Nanofat uses the same liposuction harvesting technique as fat grafting; however, the fat is processed in such a way that it has more regenerative stem cell qualities than the structural fat used as filler. This is usually injected in much smaller quantities, and can have dramatic results in overall skin quality, texture and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

What procedures are often performed with fat grafting to the face?

Fat grafting is most commonly an adjunct procedure to a facelift or an eyelid surgery. Occasionally, fat grafting is performed alone to replace the need for filler.

What can you expect on the day of your fat grafting procedure in Houston, Texas?

On the day of your surgery, if you are undergoing general anesthesia, your TOPS plastic surgeon will meet you in the preoperative area to go over any last minute questions or concerns you may have. Your plastic surgeon will make preoperative markings and will perform extensive checks and attention to detail ensuring high quality care and safety. You will meet the anesthesiologist and their team as well as the members of our plastic surgery operative team. During the procedure, our plastic surgeons pay meticulous attention to detail and work as a team to ensure a great result with a focus on safety and quality. Your family will be updated of your status periodically, and will be able to talk with the physician one-on-one after the fat grafting and any other procedures are completed.

Fat grafting alone typically takes 1 hour. If you are undergoing fat grafting to the face under local anesthesia, you will be greeted at The Oaks Plastic Surgery clinic and escorted to our procedure room. You will be given a strong topical anesthetic to minimize or eliminate any pain during the injection of local anesthetic. Your TOPS plastic surgeon will then make precise surgical markings. Your surgeon will then harvest fat using liposuction techniques, process the fat in a sterile fashion, and transfer the fat into the appropriate areas of the face. A dressing will be placed where the fat was harvested, and you will be able to leave The Oaks Plastic Surgery Clinic shortly after the procedure has been completed. Again, this procedure usually takes about 1 hour; however, plan to be at The Oaks Plastic Surgery Clinic for approximately two hours for preparation and short recovery.

What can you expect for recovery after fat grafting to the face in Houston, Texas?

Unless additional procedures, such as a facelift, were performed in addition to your fat grafting, you will be able to return home shortly after surgery. After the procedure, you will have some swelling and bruising, which is typical. It is normal to have some drainage from the liposuction port sites after surgery.

It is important to note that the fat transferred to your face will behave like your other fat cells, and the volumes may increase or decrease along with weight fluctuations. Therefore, it is important to maintain a stable weight after undergoing fat grafting to the face.
